All manufacturers, importers and distributors are liable for the collection and disposal of used electrical products and electronics.
To accommodate the obligation to collect and correctly dispose of electronic waste imposed on manufacturers, leading Danish trade organizations have founded "Elretur".
In short, all manufacturers and importers who market new products in Denmark have an obligation to correctly dispose of all e-waste. Consumers may not notice any difference, as household waste is handed in at household waste recycling centers as always. This is, however not the case for manufacturers and importers.
Companies are liable to organize and finance the disposal of e-waste. This may be organized by each individual company. As this result in increased administration and a financial burden for the individual company, most companies have joined a collective arrangement.
The Danish ministerial order (no. 664 from 27.06.2005) was passed by Danish Parliament and implemented by the Danish Ministry of the Environment in the summer of 2005.
The overall political framework is the EU-directive, the so-called WEEE-directive.
